As an Afro-Indigenous led non-profit organization, we offer our gratitude and solidarity to the Indigenous Peoples who have and continue to care for, protect and defend this land. Although it is important to acknowledge the land, it is only a first step.

We acknowledge that our organization operates on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. We pay respect to the Elders past, present, and future, who have, are, and will continue to steward this land.

KHT’s staff, operations, work, and network depend on traditional Indigenous territories to provide us physical space, sustenance, safety, and community to work, live, and play. It is important that we recognize that colonization is an economic project based on land theft, genocide and violence. We acknowledge that our ability to live and work on these lands, are a direct benefit of policies of expulsion and assimilation of Indigenous peoples during the time of settlement and Confederation. The impacts of colonization and white supremacy can be felt, heard, and seen within every industry, especially those of the education, health, social service, and justice systems.

KHT is committed to learning from and supporting Indigenous communities in our work. We will partner with Indigenous organizations to expand our knowledge, and learn from Indigenous communities about culture, history, ceremonies, way of life, and how to enrich and pass on knowledge to the future generations.

Our respect goes to all First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples for their valuable past, present and future contributions. Together, may we care for this land and each other, drawing on the strength from our mutual history of racial genocide, enslavement, intergenerational trauma, and oppression. Building through peace and friendship, and keeping in mind the generations to come.

KHT is committed to addressing racism, cultural genocide, white supremacy and working towards truth, healing, reconciliation, and racial justice in the nonprofit sector, and the communities our sector works alongside.

We will honour the land, offering programs that reflect and respect its heritage. We will embrace the healing traditions of the Ancestors, and weave them into our services and values. We will create new relationships and partnerships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis, sharing the land and protecting it for future generations.
